Differentiated materials by level

A class isn’t uniform. On the same topic, some students arrive ready and get bored, some are right on track, and some struggle and fall behind. Give everyone the same sheet and you lose two-thirds of them: the first because it’s too little, the last because it’s too much. The teaching answer is to differentiate by level: same content, versions of different difficulty.
This is a different axis from the previous lesson. Explain in five different ways works by style: the same difficulty, told from different angles. Here you work by level: the same angle, at different depths. You need it when the class is mixed, when you run catch-up in parallel with the main group, or when a unit runs over several days and you have to keep the fast and the slow together.
One base text, three derivatives
Section titled “One base text, three derivatives”The weak spot of differentiating by hand is time: writing three sheets from scratch is work few teachers actually do, so you end up giving everyone the same one. The weak spot of differentiating with AI, if you use it badly, is the opposite: you ask for three separate sheets and the AI reinvents the content at each pass, so the “easy” sheet and the “hard” sheet no longer talk about the same topic.
The pattern that avoids both problems is this: write a single base text, the one at your class’s standard (you write it, or assemble it from the textbook). Then ask the AI to derive two variants from it, not to write two new ones:
- a consolidation version: simpler vocabulary, shorter sentences, more concrete examples, exercises that ask students to apply rather than analyze;
- an extension version: richer vocabulary, more abstract examples, exercises that ask students to compare or argue.
The levels in class are three (consolidation, standard, extension), but the base text is already the standard: you only ask the AI for the two ends. The base text stays the reference. The two variants are adaptations of the same content, up and down from the standard line. That way the three levels stay aligned: they talk about the same topic, with the same facts, at three different depths.
The typical prompt is explicit about this:
“This is my base text for a first-year high school class. Derive two variants of the same content: a consolidation one (shorter sentences, simpler vocabulary, application exercises) and an extension one (comparison and argumentation exercises). Keep the same key terms and the same facts. Don’t add new topics.”
Three rules that keep the levels aligned
Section titled “Three rules that keep the levels aligned”Deriving the variants is half the work. The other half is checking they stay the same lesson at three speeds, not three different lessons. Three constraints to put in the prompt and to verify afterward.
Same answers to the base questions. The exercises on the three sheets can differ: the consolidation one asks students to apply, the extension one to argue. What has to stay identical is the core of facts and definitions under the exercises, the same core the final assessment will ask everyone. On the underlying question the three sheets must allow compatible correct answers: what varies is the depth the student reaches it at, not the fact. If the student on sheet A and the one on sheet C give irreconcilable answers to “what does the Edict of Milan establish”, one of the two variants has changed the content, not just the level.
Same working time. The three sheets have to take the same nominal time. The classic mistake is the extension one ending up with twice the exercises of the consolidation one: the student who’s ahead is punished with more work, the one who’s behind with less. Ask the AI for the constraint explicitly (“each must be completable in 25 minutes”) and time one sheet yourself to check.
Same glossary. The key terms of the base text appear in all three variants. Students need to be able to use them in oral discussion and in the assessment that follows, which is the same for everyone. What changes is how they’re explained, not which ones are there. A consolidation variant that strips out the technical terms looks kinder, but it puts those students at a disadvantage when everyone comes back to the same ground.
The difference in practice

The two variants say the same things. The consolidation one lines them up with short sentences and an application exercise (“match each reform to the problem”). The extension one ties the reforms together and asks for an argument (“why Rome wasn’t enough anymore”). The three key terms (Edict of Milan, capitatio, Constantinople) stay in both: what changes is how much they’re contextualized, not whether they’re there. The standard base text, the one pasted into the prompt, sits in between: plain sentences and an explanation exercise, without the connections the extension version asks for.
To catch whether the AI shifted a fact rather than just the level, reread each variant against the base text, not against your memory. The base text is the yardstick: if a variant states something that isn’t there, the AI derived it wrong.
What NOT to do
Section titled “What NOT to do”Don’t have the variants generated without the base text. It’s the difference between differentiating and improvising. If you ask “make me an easy sheet and a hard one on Constantine’s reforms” without giving it your text, the AI invents the content from scratch for each variant, decides for itself what matters, and you lose control over which facts and which terms end up where. The base text is what keeps the derivatives anchored.
Don’t label the sheets “easy / medium / hard”. Students notice right away, and the “easy” sheet becomes a brand. The one who gets it feels cornered, the one who sees a classmate with the “hard” one reads a hierarchy. Use neutral labels: A, B, C, or three colors, or no visible label at all and a map you keep yourself. Differentiation is there to include, not to rank in public.
Don’t let the variants drift apart by assessment time. If the final assessment is the same for everyone (and it usually is), a consolidation variant that has cut the key terms or skipped a fact leaves those students exposed on test day. Reread the three sheets side by side before handing them out, with the question: “can a student who studied A answer the assessment I give to C?”.
