    Differentiating by level and including are two different things, and confusing them does harm. The previous lesson was about levels: same topic, different difficulty. Inclusion is a different axis. A student with a specific learning difficulty can be among the brightest in the class: they don’t need an easier version, they need to be able to read without the page scrambling in front of them. The need is accessibility, not a discount on the content.

    Two terms recur in this lesson. SEN (special educational needs) is the broad umbrella: it covers specific learning difficulties (dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia) but also language, social, or temporary disadvantages. Each student with needs has a written support plan: an IEP, a 504 plan, or whatever your system calls it. Those documents already say what the student needs. The AI works within those constraints, it doesn’t rewrite them.

    Adapting a material for accessibility moves along three axes. Often you combine two or three on the same sheet.

    The shape of the page. For a student with dyslexia, how the text is laid out matters as much as what it says. High-legibility fonts (Atkinson Hyperlegible, Easy Reading, OpenDyslexic), wide line spacing, generous spacing between words, short lines, text aligned left and never justified: justification opens “rivers” of white space that make you lose your line. You set the font and the spacing yourself in your word processor, not the AI in the chat. What the AI does is rewrite the text so it fits this format without getting poorer: it splits long sentences, breaks lines where it makes sense, drops the asides that stretch the line.

    From paragraph to diagram. For dyslexia, ADHD, and several attention difficulties a concept map or a block diagram is often more readable than ten lines of linear prose. The AI is good at proposing the structure: you give it the chapter’s themes and their relationships, and it gives you back the skeleton of a diagram, usually as an indented list or ASCII, not as a finished image. You validate it and draw it as a real map, or have the student draw it, which is an exercise in itself. The AI proposes the skeleton, not the last word: a wrong map confuses more than a paragraph does, and an AI-generated image often comes out with the labels in the wrong spots.

    Shorter sentences, same terms. This is the axis where the AI goes wrong most often, and it goes wrong in the direction that looks kind. You ask it for a “simpler” version and, to simplify, it throws out the technical terms: “sonnet” becomes “poem”, “enjambment” disappears. But the student has to know those terms at the assessment, the same as their classmates. The right simplification touches the syntax (short sentences, fewer subordinate clauses, direct subject-verb-object order) and keeps the key vocabulary, glossing it if anything: “the sonnet (a 14-line poem)”. The constraint to put in the prompt is explicit: “shorter sentences, but keep all the technical terms and explain them in parentheses the first time”.

    The content is all there. The single textbook sentence, four lines long and full of subordinate clauses, has become a handful of short sentences in direct order. The terms stayed (sonnet, fair youth, dark lady) with a gloss in parentheses on first use. The theme map gives the student the visual skeleton to hang the details on. What didn’t change: the number of poems, the 1609 date, the three figures. Those are the facts the assessment will ask the whole class.

    On a literary text, though, simplifying can flatten a nuance: “wrought” isn’t quite “made”, “vexed and sensual attachment” says more than “a difficult kind of love”. Reread the accessible version against the original and, where the nuance matters for your subject, put it back by hand with a gloss rather than letting it drop.

    Before you use this version, it also has to go to whoever supports the student. The chat gave you a quick draft, not a validated material.

    Don’t ask the AI to “assess the severity” of the difficulty. It isn’t a diagnostic tool and it hasn’t seen the student. Questions like “how severe is this dyslexia” or “what level of support is needed” get invented answers that sound competent. Diagnosis and the plan are made by specialists, and they’re already written in the support plan.

    Don’t override the plan that already exists. If the plan says “maps yes, audio material no” and you have the AI generate an audio version because it seems like a good idea, you’re contradicting strategies decided with the family and the specialists. The AI adapts within the plan’s constraints, not in place of the plan.

    Don’t put labels on the material. The sheet the student receives isn’t called “the SEN version” and doesn’t carry a different badge. It has to be accessible without being marked. The same logic as the neutral labels in the lesson on levels applies: adapting is there to include, not to flag. Often an accessible version (short sentences, a diagram, glosses) is clearer for everyone, and nothing stops you from giving it to the whole class: if everyone gets it, it flags no one.
